What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
A fragrance is made out of the concentrate (or oil): the pure blend of ingredients (what smells) and alcohol (the carrier). EdT is generally concentrated at 10 to 12% in alcohol, which means that in any 100ml of your perfume, you have 10ml (or 12) of the pure oil while the rest is alcohol. EdP is generally concentrated around 15% and the same logic applies. Eau de parfum should be a stronger version than Eau de toilette, for instance, woodier, more amber and sweeter although nowadays there is little difference.
Where should I wear my perfume?
You can wear a fragrance anywhere, but it’s always a good idea to spray on your pulse points (the wrist and neck). These areas are generally warmer which then helps project the fragrance so people are more likely to be able to sense how good you smell! If you want a fragrance to cling to your clothes then there’s no harm in a little spritz all over, but it will need to have a lot of base notes to stick around.
Does the fragrance change on my skin?
Yep! All perfumes will smell ever so slightly different depending on who’s skin it’s on. Why? Well, it’s made of molecules much like our skin, so it will react to many different things such as pH levels, diet, hormones and heat. Some brands will market a fragrance as “smelling different on everyone” but that’s true for all perfumes. All of this is also without taking into account your own personal perception of a fragrance, remember all noses are different.
Should I wear my perfume on bare skin or on clothes?
The best is to apply the fragrance directly onto unclothed skin. This method creates an alchemy between the skin and the perfume, which is going to express the scent in a more personalized way. On the skin, the perfume gets warmer — it rises with your temperature, which isn’t the case of a perfume applied directly on clothes.
Why can't I smell my perfume but others can?
Our noses are all different. That means some are better at detecting some smells compared to others! Also, after we’ve worn a fragrance a few times or for a short while, we can get used to the smell but to someone else it’s scent is just as strong as the first spritz. So be careful, some times less is more and we don’t want to be that person who you can smell five minutes before they enter a room because we can’t seem to smell it ourselves!
Can I use skincare products from different companies?
What matters when it comes to your skincare routine is correctly assessing your skin care needs and finding the right skin care ingredients and formulations for your skin—not the name of the company on the product label.
How can I tell what skin type I have?
It’s important to notice how your skin feels on any given day of the week. The texture of your skin can reveal a lot about its essential nature. Your pores are also big indicators of your skin type. Their size and tendency to get clogged can tell you a lot about your skin and its oil production. Notice how your skin feels after cleansing.
- Combination skin: After cleansing, combination skin will often feel clean, refreshed and oil-free around the nose area but tight and dry around the cheeks.
- Sensitive skin: Sensitive skin will often feel clean and a bit dry after washing but the cleanser may trigger itching and irritation to occur. When this happens frequently and with a range of products, it is a sign of sensitive skin.
- Normal skin: People with normal skin will feel their skin clean and clear after cleansing. They might still be in need of a little moisturizer, but overall the skin doesn’t feel too parched or sensitive.
- Oily skin: After cleansing, oily skin will feel clean and oil-free, almost the only time it feels that way. Shortly after cleansing, oil will return.
- Dry skin: For dry skin, cleansing can dry out the skin and make it feel taut and dehydrated.
When should I start using anti-aging products?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but our collagen and elastin production starts to slow in our early twenties (and these are the building blocks of young, bouncy, skin). On top of that, our cells don’t regenerate as quickly either. So, it makes sense to add anti-ageing products and exfoliators into your routine in your twenties to keep your complexion looking plump and glowing.
Should I wear sunscreen everyday?
In short, yep – don’t skip on the sun protection even if it’s cloudy outside. Products containing a minimum of SPF 15 help decrease the harmful ageing effects of the sun, like wrinkles, fine lines, freckles (though cute on some people) and skin discolouration.
Do I need eye cream?
If you’re concerned with puffiness, dark circles or crow’s feet then an eye cream is a smart addition to your routine, as it will have been formulated to tackle the specific issue at hand. It will also be lighter in texture, which is ideal for the delicate eye area.
